Adult Art Classes
At CANVAS, we keep our class sizes small, which enables our instructors to tailor each class to your creative needs. As artists ourselves, we know that everyone is coming from a different place. We meet you where you are - whether you've never picked up a pencil, or if you've been creating for years - and provide you with personalized instruction so you can take your artistic practice to the next level. Don't see a class that fits your needs? Private instruction available. Give us a call at 828-577-4590 to let us know how we can help.

NEW! Watercolor for Beginners w/ Gena Hawk
Come see how a simple cup of water, colors, and a inquisitive eye can make beautiful art! This beginner’s watercolor class will focus on introductory concepts including washes, glazing, masking, and general approaches to using the elusive medium of watercolor. We will discuss bringing a beginner's mind to your art, as well as ways to "go with the flow" and enjoy the meditative qualities of watercolor.
Each student will learn basic techniques through hands-on exercises and complete several guided watercolor paintings. TUESDAYS, 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM 4-week session: $160 Next Session: September 3, 10, 17, 24 Students are asked to provide their own materials. Click here to view the material list. |
About the Artist
I found watercolor after becoming interested in loosening my approach to painting. I soon fell in love with the medium and the elemental flow that is unique to watercolor. I have been painting (using my mother’s oil paints) since I was 10 years old, when I entered my first painting (of Snoopy) in the Minnesota state fair. I began teaching adult watercolor and drawing workshops in 2013 and have happily discovered that, for me, teaching is the best way to learn.

This four-week course will focus on painting as a medium for visual expression and the exploration of formal and technical concerns within the parameters of studio projects. For the intermediate to seasoned painter, we will encourage students to develop and strengthen sensitivity to shape, line, rhythm, and the plastic structures possible within the realm of painting. You will be introduced to the works and concepts of historically significant painters as they relate to your own personal artistic practice. Individual and group critiques will be emphasized in each class to help strengthen your ability to read and understand the language of painting.
