“An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one.”

                                 - Charles Horton Cooley

Instructor: Susan Goodman
Skill Level: Beginner
Ages:
14+
Media: Pen & Ink

Fee: $50 (includes a take-home Zentangle drawing kit)
Join instructor Susan Goodman in a fun and relaxing atmosphere to discover how the Zentangle Method can teach you to unwind while creating beautiful images. With Susan's guidance, you will learn about this meditative art form which uses elemental strokes in repetitive patterns to create zen-inspired art.

You will then use your new skills to create a one-of-a-kind Zentangle Star Ornament, complete with coordinating ribbon.

Each participant will bring home a Zentangle drawing kit and star ornament template so you will have everything you need to continue to develop your Zentangle practice (and make more ornaments!)

These beautiful hand-made stars, made big or small, are not only beautiful ornaments, but could also be used as unique greeting cards or gift tags.

Instructor: Michael Murphy
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Join local artist Michael Murphy in this 4-week outdoor class, observing and sketching the world around you. Each class, we will visit a different location in and around Hendersonville, where we will become keen observers, finding beauty and interest in the everyday.  We will learn to interpret what we see using various creative approaches to sketching - from quick sketches to thoughtful studies.  Technique and basic drawing concepts will be integrated throughout including value, color, vantage point, and speed. We will also touch on the integration of text, both visually and contextually, as we think about creating sketchbooks that not only document what we see, but are also an expression of our personal experience.  Instructor, Michael Murphy will share the sketchbooks he has created over his lifetime to serve as inspiration and as a reference point for what is possible with a trained eye, pencil and pad.

Since moving to North Carolina, he has been an illustrator, founding "my buddy Pal," a line of greeting cards inspired by his golden retriever, and art educator, serving as docent at the Greenville Museum of Art for more than 25 major art exhibitions.

In this workshop, we will learn to create beautiful, small pastel drawings using a limited palette; reviewing and practicing various layering and mixing techniques that are unique to the limited pallet approach.

We
will have a special focus on birth flowers. Flowers, like gemstones, have a traditionally designated month that they represent. Discover your own birth flower and learn to create depth and richness using color in unexpected ways. We will also consider foreground and background as we learn different ways to depict our subject within a natural or abstract environment.

Each participant will create a color study and a completed 6x6 soft pastel drawing on sanded paper.

No experience necessary! All levels welcome! Each student will work from and be encouraged from where they are.

If you have taken one of Deborah's workshops before, you can bring in your 64 ct. soft pastel pallet and save $8 off the price of this workshop.
