WALKING IN THE DARK
Paintings by Joel Edwards June 14 - July 7 CANVAS ArtSpace is pleased to present 'Walking in the Dark' a series of paintings by Joel Edwards that are steeped in process and the unconscious.
In this latest group of paintings, the artist employed methods using a wide range of materials producing unexpected dialogues and meanings. Approaching his canvases both as surfaces to paint on as well as a physical objects to engage with, Edwards will work on both front and reverse simultaneously. Employing deconstructive techniques like razor blade incisions, punctures, and poured bleach — the artist encourages the paint to travel through to the reverse in unexpected ways. The resulting imagery yields what Edwards describes as "bleed drawings". These serve as the catalyst for building more information, often by pouring and spraying paints, allowing the painting to develop independently of the artists hand "I listen to the materials and what I don't have control over" Edwards says, "It's maintaining a balance of chance and control." |
Joel Edwards appeared as the featured artist in the July 2018 issue of Bold Life Magazine.
