Exploring Watercolors, with Terrilynn Dubreuil

Please be sure to purchase the required materials for your class prior to the first day of class. All materials are available at our local art supply store, The Starving Artist, located at 814 Kanuga Road, Hendersonville, NC 28793. If you have any questions about the materials for your class, please contact us.

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS

*** The cost of Art Supplies can add up! But they're also essential to making art. I recommend purchasing supplies if you can, so you are able to practice and continue to learn at home. If you are on a tight budget, or not quite ready to make the investment, contact Jennifer at CANVAS ArtSpace to ask about borrowing CANVAS art materials for a smaller, flat fee. ***

PAINTS: watercolor paint can be purchased "wet" in a tube or "dry" in a cake. Either is fine for this class. Following are my recommended colors. If the store you go to is out of one of these, substitutes are fine. I just prefer these!
  • Lemon Yellow
  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Cadmium Red
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Burnt Sienna (optional) (
  • Yellow Ochre (optional)
  • Burnt Umber
  • Lamp Black

BRUSHES:
  • Japanese bamboo brush (medium size)
  • Flat Wash brush ¾ - 1 inch size

PALETTE:  There are many types of palettes available. You can simply purchase a re-uasable artist's pallet from the art supply store or make your own using a piece of masonite with butcher paper taped on top.  We've seen people use plastic plates and sturdier thrift-store ceramic plates. Anything waterproof with a white background for mixing color will do the trick!

PAPER:
Watercolor paper, 140lb or higher, cold press

OTHER:

Flat waterproof board (to put paper on)
Kitchen sponge
Small spray bottle (for water)
graphite pencil
erasers (
gum, kneaded, or plastic)

CANVAS ArtSpace will supply water containers, paper towels, masking tape and toilet paper (yes! you read that right - will be explained during class). But feel free to bring your own, too, if you'd like.
