​ROMANTIC VISIONS
Paintings by Lillia Frantin and Herb Edwards

Couple artists have been greatly romanticized through time: Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz, Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. These artist couples found their niches in working together and apart, some successfully, others less so. Cape Cod artists Lillia Frantin and Herb Edwards, who will be married 50 years this September, met while studying art in graduate school at Pratt Institute. Since then, both artists have enjoyed prolific and successful painting careers, exhibiting extensively in noteworthy galleries across the United States.  A selection of their new paintings are featured together in the exhibition Romantic Visions: Paintings by Herb Edwards & Lillia Frantin on view at CANVAS ArtSpace from July 12 - August 11, 2018.  Edwards has included several plein aire landscapes of marshes, for which he is well-known, and Frantin is exhibiting her iconic neo fauvist take on the still life. 

“Like a good relationship, painting is a never-ending process where you always strive for success,” Herb Edwards says.  “We’ve both been inspired by each other,” Lillia added. “We’re always looking at each other’s work and talking through different things. We talk about art all the time.”

​HERB EDWARDS

Herb Edwards was born in Western Pennsylvania in 1940. He earned his BFA from the The University of New Mexico in 1963 and received an MFA from Pratt Institute, NY in 1969. He was a Professor of Art for over twenty years at Brookdale Community College in New Jersey and his paintings are in numerous private and public collections. His artwork has received many awards and has been exhibited nationally at galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico; San Francisco, CA; Baltimore, Maryland; Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts; and New York City. He has exhibited internationally at galleries in Provence and Normandy, France; and Toronto, Canada.

LILLIA FRANTIN

Born in New York City in 1944, Lillia Frantin received her MFA at Pratt Institute, NY in 1968, and has been exhibiting professionally for 40 years. Her work has been featured in galleries in Santa Fe, Palm Desert, Barcelona, Paris, Palm Beach, Boston and New York, and is widely collected in the United States and abroad. She has led plein aire landscape workshops in inspiring locales including the Abiqui region of New Mexico, Provence in France and the historic art community of Provincetown, MA. Lillia currently lives and works in Cape Cod, MA.
