July 24, 25, 26
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Instructor: Lillia Frantin
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
Media: Oil / Alkyd
Fee: $240 (plus materials; click here for material list)Join visiting artist Lillia Frantin and discover the emotional possibilities of the still-life using a joyful approach to color and composition that goes beyond traditional, expected ‘flower painting’. Lillia is nationally-known for her unique Romantic Expressionist approach and in this three-day workshop will help you develop a large-scale, expressive oil painting and a more dynamic approach to your own work. For the experienced as well as beginning painter, Lillia will help you explore color, scale and paint handling that adds movement, rhythm and the richness of surface texture to create a ‘not-so-still-Still-life’.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The workshop will begin with a music & art presentation of “Starry Starry Night” sung by composer Don McLean with his lyrics and the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh. We’ll then discuss breakthroughs of Modernism, personal expression and the connection between an artists’ vision, the medium of oils (its history and special properties) and the process of oil painting itself. Lillia will begin a 30x30 painting based on a studio still-life and discuss how she uses the subject, composition, surface, color and color placement to create movement, rhythm and emotion. Students can then select a studio still life to work from, create several preliminary sketches, and finish the session drawing on the canvas. The workshop will always focus on individual progress and on the final day, a lively critique will pull it all together.
