Soft pastels are a unique medium. They are the most pure form of paint because they use the least amount of binder possible. This allows them to showcase the vidid color of raw pigments, and gives them a particular vibrancy. This binder-to-pigment ratio means they also handle differently than other paints like oil, acrylic and watercolor. In this pastel class we will learn the basic properties of the medium, and will introduce the materials, tools and techniques specific to pastels.
We will begin our creative adventure working from a still life, exploring layering, blending, and juxtaposing colors, as well as basic art concepts, like composition and balance. Once we acquire a familiarity with the tools and techniques, we will refine our approach and understanding of the medium by working on individual projects. We will learn best practices for how to approach varied subject matter, and will learn to use photos as resources.
This class is great for beginners, as well as experienced pastelists. Novices will learn the basics, while experienced students will develop their personal style and gain a deeper understanding of the medium.
