In this workshop, students will learn to print original holiday cards, gift tags, wrapping paper and more using traditional printmaking techniques. Each participant will learn to carve a block using their own original artwork (or one of our designs). We will then practice inking and transferring the design, using various ink colors to achieve different looks.  Our final project will be printing a series of 10 note cards or gift tags, blank on the reverse and ready for your personalized message.

Your carved block is yours to take home so you can continue practicing, printing and creating!

No experience necessary! All levels welcome!

In this workshop, each participant will create a set of four hand-made wooden coasters using the art of parquetry. A finely crafted set of coasters, made by you, would make a wonderfully thoughtful gift for the holidays!

In parquetry, the artisan uses pieces of solid wood, 1/8" thick or thicker, to form geometric patterns, which are then inlaid upon a craft-quality ply backing board. The geometric patterns are defined by the various colors of differing wood species; no stains, paints or dyes are used.

Each participant will be invited to create their own design, choosing from hundreds of pre-cut pieces of wood. The final product will be sanded, and a protective finish applied, so your coasters will be finished and ready to enjoy at home.

All tools and materials will be supplied by the artist, including an impressive range of wood species, many rare and unusual.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
David Adler is a third generation woodworker, who began working with wood as an art form in 2000.  A retired manufacturing engineer, David found himself drawn to developing novel techniques for manipulating wood, and mastering the unique tools and mechanisms used for parquetry.  He works with over 170 different species of wood, and finds visual inspiration from his wife, who is a quilter.

Just in time to start addressing those holiday cards, join guest instructor, Karlie Altherr of Lighthouse Paper Co. for a fun afternoon learning how to design your own beautiful envelopes. In this workshop, Karlie will provide you with an introduction to creative hand-lettering. You'll learn about basic lettering supplies, 3 different lettering styles, working with a grid, addressing an envelope with style, and adding ornamentation to fit a theme.

After this 2-hour workshop, you’ll have the confidence and skills to not only create gorgeous envelopes for your holiday cards, but for birthdays, thank you notes, and even elegant invitations of your own!

Each participant brings home a lettering supply kit.

Take-home drawing kit includes: Pencil, eraser, black marker, white gel pen, colored envelope, holiday card, workbook, and envelope lettering template

Instructor: Susan Goodman
Skill Level: Beginner
Ages:
14+
Media: Pen & Ink

Fee: $45 (including a take-home Zentangle drawing kit)
Beyond the Basics is the next level in the Zentangle series. The prerequisite is having taken an introductory Zentangle class with a certified instructor (CANVAS's Zentangle: The Art of Meditative Drawing is a qualifying class). We will build upon the tangles you learned in the first class, and will be introduced to new tangles. In this class we’ll learn more advanced techniques -- using ‘strings’ as a guide, as well as shading -- to bring depth and dimension to the design. Please bring the supplies from your Basics class and more supplies will be provided.

In this workshop we will expand on our knowledge of the human form by building upon the basic skills we learned in Drawing Faces for Beginners: Part I.  In Part II we will learn how to add dimension to our drawings using value and shading, and will also learn how to approach the portrait from different angles -- above, below and 3/4 views.

For our final project, we will learn to draw from a live model, bringing together the new concepts we learned in a completed rendered portrait.

As with Part I, this is a an active studio class, and each participant will work on  several facial studies and renderings at standing easels.

Drawing Faces for Beginners, Part I is a pre-requiste for this workshop.

Instructor: Terrilynn Dubreuil
Skill Level: Beginner
Ages:
16+
Media: Pencil, Charcoal

Fee: $45 (includes materials)

In this workshop we will learn to create a realistic portrait by studying the building blocks of the human face. Using simplification, we can discover the shapes and proportions that are universal to the human form and can help us depict portraits with greater ease and confidence.

We will work standing at easels to complete several facial studies, and will then approach a more rendered, final project.  Several techniques will be practiced and internalized while we touch on basic drawing concepts, such as balance, contour, composition and proportion.

Creativity and experimentation will be encouraged!

This workshop is great for beginning artists, or artists who have ever struggled with depicting the human form.

To advance your skills further, register for "Drawing Faces, Part II" offered in the afternoon on the same day, and join us for lunch at the studio.

Fresh Color and Coffee:
Managing Color in Your Paintings

Instructor: Susan Webb Tregay, AWS, NWS
Skill Level: All Levels

Ages: 18+
Media: Watercolor or acrylic
Fee: $80 (materials included)
In this workshop, nationally-known artist Susan Webb Tregay AWS, NWS will share eight color strategies that will help you understand and utilize color in sophisticated and polished ways.  Applicable to all media and colorful crafts, she will simplify color theory into basic concepts. Each strategy will be explored through slides, demonstrations, handouts and painting.

Working in watercolor (or acrylic), participants will select four of the seven strategies to apply to small paintings, using a modest coffee mug as your subject. Bring your favorite mug, or use one of ours to explore the different results that can be achieved by treating the same subject with different approaches.

Throughout the workshop a second mug will be provided so students can enjoy sipping fresh brewed coffee from local, small-batch coffee roaster, Sharewell Coffee Co. (Herbal will be tea available, too!)

Bring your favorite painting supplies. If you don't have watercolors and would like to try them, we will provide everything for you.

All levels are welcome, some painting experience preferred, but not required.

Artist/Instructor Susan Webb Tregay is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and National Watercolor Society. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the country, winning many national prizes, including 8th Place in the annual American Watercolor Society exhibition. Susan has developed a unique process for rescuing watercolors, which she shared in her book, Master Disaster, by North Light Press. Her new book, 2000 Painting Titles, will be available at the workshop.

Instructor: John Cox
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Ages: 10+
Media: Pencil, paper
Fee: $30 (materials included)
Join professional illustrator and local resident, John Cox, for a two-hour drawing workshop and demonstration. With a focus on character development and fundamental drawing techniques, John will help participants create cartoon characters that grab the imagination.

Each participant brings home a free caricature!

John has more than 20 years of commercial experience, drawing cartoons for a number of publications. From hundreds of editorial cartoons produced during the early 2000's, including the popular "Cox & Forkum" political cartoons, to the daily strip, KIRKWOOD, John has developed a loyal following.

Cold Wax Techniques

In this workshop, students will learn how to use cold wax as a medium for oil painting, exploring various application techniques - both additive and reductive - to create abstract or realistic paintings.

We will focus on exploring how cold wax differs from other mediums and what can be achieved through the physical and exploratory process of scraping and carving into layers. Experimentation will be encouraged -- we will use a variety of tools to create textures, marks, shapes, lines, and forms.

This process differs from encaustic wax painting in that cold wax is applied without using heat.

Material list:  Students supply their own brushes, oil paints and apron, (1) 16 oz. jar of Cold Wax, and (1) 12 x 12 X 1.5" cradled wood panel.

This workshop will enjoy a festive St. Patrick's Day theme - we'll be celebrating with traditional Irish food and drink!

Group Critique

Sharing your artwork with others and getting critical feedback is an integral part of the creative process. Unfortunately, so many of us work in the isolation of our studios and don't often participate in that type of exchange. CANVAS's Group Critique sessions provide a space and opportunity for practicing artists to gain critical feedback from guest curators and other artists.

The Group Critique is open to artists of all levels, media, and subject. To ensure every participating artist receives meaningful and insightful feedback about their work, the group will be limited to 12 artists.

We don't want money to be a barrier for artists who would like to participate, so it is free to attend the Group Critique. If you can afford to, a $10 donation would be appreciated so CANVAS ArtSpace can continue to provide this unique opportunity to the local arts community.  Thank you!
